This week’s assignment from the League: I have a dream…

This week’s assignment from the League: I have a dream…

We all have them. Some are ambitious, some are farfetched, and some might even be attainable. This week’s assignment for the League of Extraordinary Bloggers…

I have a dream…

For those who know me, or have read my blogs or listened to my podcasts, you would know I am a huge comic book fan. I have been a fan of the comic book art form for most of my life, except for about 8 years in my 20’s when my focus was on partying, then girls, then eventually getting married with children. So for a good 20+ years of my life I have enjoyed comic books in some form or another. At first I was all about the art: the style & the colors is what sold me. But as I got older and matured I actually began to read comic books and appreciate them as a print medium, rather than just art.

I was about 12 years old when my Mom, who would often pick up random comics for me while grocery shopping in town, brought me a copy of ‘The Incredible Hulk’ issue 397.

It was part 1 of Peter David’s epic ‘Ghosts of the Past’ 4 part story leading into issue #400. This story (with art by Dale Keown) literally blew me away. And for the next 6 years I did not miss an issue of Peter David’s run on the Hulk comic book. I caught the last 6 years of David’s 12 year run writing this book, and it is in my opinion THE BEST run in comic book history, period. I remember being upset when Peter David left the book with issue 467. Marvel Editorial in their infinite wisdom questioned David’s future plans for the book and character. They wanted him to go back to Savage Hulk (“Hulk Smash”) depiction of the character, and that conflicted with his goals for the book so he left. And the Hulk took a plummet in sales numbers with Marvel losing a lot of money.

In 2012 I got a chance to meet Peter David at the Calgary Comic & Entertainment Expo. I spent probably 20 minutes asking him questions and getting him to sign some of my Hulk comics. Peter David really is a great guy. Sadly Peter suffered a stroke last Christmas while on holidays in Florida. He has made a remarkable recovery since but as you can imagine he has a lot of medical expenses. So if you are a fan or at all interested in discovering his work go buy his graphic novels or novels, that will definitely help him out with the bills.

Anyway back to this week’s league topic: I have a dream. In 1996 while reading the Hulk I decided my ultimate dream job is to be a comic book writer. My dream is to one day write for comics. Even after all these years that’s still something I want to do. I’ve got a couple of proposals I’m going to submit to DC Comics, and some creator owned stuff I have been developing, some since 1996… But work, family and ‘real life’ have slowed me from pursuing my dream to be a comic book writer. But I am about to get off my ‘butt’ and get cracking on this dream. At least one day I can say I tried…

Happy New Year!! 2013 is here!!

Hey there, this is your old pal Chris finally getting back to the blog. It has been a while. December was a crazy month as always with the holidays, the podcast schedules, etc. But I’m here with a few updates to share:
·       Random Nerdness Podcast Schedule:
I’m hoping  Episode 11 will be released the week of January 8th. My Sound Engineer/Brother-in-law Seb took the family back home to Sweden for the Christmas holidays. They will be back next week and I’m sure he’ll have Ep 11 prepped for release shortly after. Ep 11 and 12 were recorded previously. We are slated to record Ep 13 & 14 the weekend of Jan 12 with a trivia challenge and He-Man episode!! I am very excited to get back to recording the RN podcast. I hope you all enjoyed the Ep 10 Christmas Special. Big thanks to the guys at the Atomic Geeks Podcast and Geek Fallout Podcast for submitting segments for the episode. It was awesome and sounded great! Thanks again!

·       Geek Fallout Podcast:
The GF crew and I are slated to start recording again tomorrow night!! Very excited to get chatting with those guys again!!

·       League of Extraordinary Bloggers:
I will be blogging again under the Leagues banner soon. I was again very busy so it has been a while. But I’m looking forward to future League Assignments!!

·       Peter David:
One of my favorite comic book writers and novelists Peter David suffered a stroke over the Christmas holidays. I met Peter last year at the Calgary Con and he was an awesome guy to chat with. Check out his blog at peterdavid.net for updates on his status. Also help support him by buying is books and comics. He truly is an amazing writer and I wish him a speedy recovery.

And that is all for now. Talk with you later!

Best Wishes for Peter David!!

New York Times Best Selling Author and Comic Book Writing Legend, Peter David, recently posted on his website that he has suffered a stroke while vacationing with family in Florida, further details to come as they become clarified.

I Huge fan of Peters work, from his 'Star Trek' novels to his unbeatable run on the 'Incredible Hulk'. I am currently reading his work on 'X-Factor' and I purchased some new fantasy novels from him earlier this year which I am looking forward to reading. My son and & I had a chance to meet him this past April in Calgary at the Comic Expo. He was gracious, answered all my questions I had for him and autographed the books I wanted him to. It was a great experience and he truly is my favourite writer and someone I look to for inspiration as I too dream of becoming a writer of comic books. Get well soon Peter, you truly are a wonderful human being!

Meeting Peter David this past April at the Calgary Comic & Entertainment Expo

Blog # 37: 15 Great Books

1 "Angels and Demons" by Dan Brown: Easily the best book I have ever read. I couldn't put it down on the last 200 pages, I read for almost 6 hours straight, which is a world record for me!

2 "The Da Vinci Code" again by Dan Brown. Not as good as 'Angels and Demons' but still a hell of a read!

3 "Heir To The Empire" by Timothy Zahn. I am a Star Wars nerd and this was the first book that continued the adventures of Luke Skywalker and company. It is an awesome book and changed Star Wars forever. Zahn also created the best book villain I have ever read, Grand Admiral Thrawn, who was the only alien ever to have served the Emperor and the Galactic Empire. He had blue skin and glowing red eyes...really cool character.

4 "What Savage Beast" by Peter David. It is a novel about the comic book character "The Incredible Hulk" and it should have been made into a movie!!! David wrote the comic book for 12 years and made the character and supporting cast awesome and relevant. Awesome book.

5 "Too Fat To Fish" by Artie Lange. Artie is a comedian and part of the 'Howard Stern Show' and this book is his autobiography. It was a great read, he is both funny and a tragic guy, a lot of sadness in the book to plus a lot of laughs.

6 "3001: A Space Odyssey" by Arthur C.Clarke. The final and most interesting chapter of the 'Odyssey' books.

7 "Beam Me Up, Scotty: Star Trek's "Scotty" in his own words" by James Doohan with Peter David. I loved Scotty from Star Trek and had a blast reading his book. Did you know he is Canadian and fought for Canada overseas in World War II. He tells a lot of amazing stories from the war in his book. I actually met him once when I was 15 at a Star Trek convention in Edmonton which was cool and made reading his biography extra special to read.

8 "The Last Command" by Timothy Zahn. The second sequel to 'Heir to the Empire'.

9 "Vision Of The Future" by Timothy Zahn. Takes place 10 years after 'Last Command' and features the last battle between the New Republic and the Empire and their eventual peace...

10 "Star Trek Memories" by William Shatner. Shatner is a great actor and awesome person/personality. His first memoir about being on 'Star Trek' is both hilarious and interesting to read.

11 "Why We Suck" by Denis Leary. Leary is a hell of a comic and I am a fan of his show "Rescue Me" so reading his take on life, family and Hollywood is fascinating to read.

12 "Conquerors' Trilogy" by Timothy Zahn. This is actually 3 books but they must be read together, they are almost like 1 book divided into 3 separate parts. In a space opera setting, a botched first contact leads to an interstellar war between humanity (nicknamed by the aliens The Human-Conquerors) and an alien race, the Zhirrzh (nicknamed by humans The Conquerors). In the background, other alien races try to take advantage of the conflict between the two powers. (Novels: 'Conquerors' Pride', 'Conquerors' Heritage' and 'Conquerors' Legacy').

13 "Marvel (Comics) Encyclopedia" and "DC Comics Encyclopedia" published by DK. These are 2 books that are almost the same. They are the definitive reference to those two comic book company's and their characters. I am a total nerd and loved reading these books.

14 "Dark Force Rising" by Timothy Zahn. It is the second sequel to 'Heir To The Empire' and feature's Lukes first encounter with the insane Jedi clone Joruus C'Boath.

15 "Murder Most Foul" by Max Haines. He is the guy who writes the 'Murder' story in every Sunday Sun newspaper. He has written so many stories about true crime that the re-publish his stories in book form and I read 'Murder Most Foul' while vacationing in Germany in 2001. I bought at Pearson airport in Toronto while waiting for my connecting flight to Germany, I was hooked on his writing after the first page. I have bought and read many of his book of collected stories. I made the mistake of lending them to my mother-in-law so I'll probably never see them again. He is a great writer and his stories are all true stories!!! Humans really are sick and twisted, just read his book and you'll agree.

Beer Goggles: June 2012

Better late then never...
As part of my 'Random Nerdness' Blog I have included a monthly update I am calling 'Beer Goggles' where I will share a brief outline on what I am drinking, reading, viewing and listening to for the month.
Beer: I am drinking some 'Old Milwaukee'. It's cheap and it's not half bad. I'm also drinking me some Warthog Ale and Honey Brown from Calgary's Big Rock Brewing Company. Also on the non-beer side of things I am not much of a smoker but I was recently given some authentic Costa Rican Cigars which I may be smoking while drinking some beer in my backyard.

Comics & Books: I am almost a year behind in reading 'Catwoman' from DC Comics. I keep ordering it every month and the pile keeps on getting bigger so this month I intend to get caught up on the adventures of the sexy cat burglar with he goggles, also known as Selina Kyle.

I bought the first 2 novels in Peter David's 'The Hidden Earth Chronicles' at the Calgary Expo, from Mr Peter David himself and I even had them autographed. I'm not a big fan of fantasy novels but given that this is written by Peter David it should be an enjoyable read. I'm was supposed to start Book 1 in May but didn't have a chance so I'll be reading it this month, or next...

Viewing: I'm a little behind in my DC Animation viewing so this month I will be watching for the first time the 'Batman Year One', 'Wonder Woman' and 'Batman/Superman Public Enemies' DVD movies. I have also just bought the newest release 'Superman Versus The Elite', so I'll be watching that too. DC has done an excellent job with their movies that I have already seen so I'm sure to be pleased. I also bought the DVD of Season 1 Part 1 of the New 'Thundercats' series. I never actually watched the original series as a kid but I was told this series is very similar to the 2002 He-Man series, which I really enjoyed. So I'll be checking it out.

Listening: Having a long drive to work every workday I tend to do a lot of listening. 'The Atomic Geeks', 'Nerd Lunch' and 'Classic Film Jerks' are all great podcasts I love to listen to. Some other great podcasts I listen to are: 'iFanboy', 'Comic Geek Speak', 'Smodcast', 'Starbase 66', 'Nerd Hurdles' and 'I Sell Comics'. I've also downloaded some great audiobooks I hope to crack open this month: 'Bradbury 13', radio-like drama's about some of Ray Bradbury's classic sci-fi tales. Also 'World War Z: An Oral History Of The Zombie War'. I also have William Shatner's and Leonard Nimoy's autobiographies to listen to.
Well that is all for June's 'Beer Goggles'.
Cheers!

Blog #27: Calgary Comic & Entertainment Expo 2012

The dust has settled and another year at the Calgary Expo has come and gone. For the most part I am very happy with my experience this year. I got to see every member of the original TNG cast, got their autographs or got my picture taken with them. I also got to meet Stan Lee, Comic book writing icon Peter David, John Noble from 'Fringe' and got to have beers with a wrestling legend: The Honky Tonk Man. I also managed to buy some stuff including a prop sword similar to the ones used on 'Game Of Thrones', a 'Superman' bathrobe, several sci-fi t-shirts and most importantly I added to my vintage 80's He-Man toy collection. The best part of the weekend was the time I got to spend with my son Bailey. He is a wrestling fan and had a great time meeting Jake The Snake, Honky Tonk Man, Million Dollar Man and other wrestling legends. All in all a very good weekend.

But there is a downside to this year. This year the number of people attending the con almost doubled, probably due to the TNG reunion but also in part by the stellar list of celebrities they had besides the TNG cast. Saturday in particular got so bad the Calgary Fire Marshall stepped in and banned people from entering the building. Even people with weekend passes were being denied access the con. One guy I met in line for a photo op told me he had went out to his car to unload some of the stuff he had bought then was forced to stand in line for almost 3 hours before he was let back in. People who had photo-ops payed for weren't being allowed in. And the lines inside were beyond ridiculous. I stood in line for a 'Fringe' photo op for over 2 hours, then with just 10 people ahead of me they closed the photo-op session. I almost lost my mind. Saturday I literally spent the whole day in lines. But I don't think the organizers realized just how many people would show up and were taken completely by surprise to the number of people who did show. They even expanded the con area space this year and it still did not create enough room. Being a fan of this con I have a few suggestions for the Calgary Con organizers which I think will help them next year to create an enjoyable experience for all and not alienate people.

1: Sell tickets to the event on line only. No more door sales. That way the days will not get over sold which clearly is what happened Saturday because people with weekend passes were being turned away and that's not fair at all.

2: More photo-op areas and have them in a different area away from the autograph area. Why not have 6 photo-op areas spread around. That way the photo-ops will move faster and flow better.

3: In regards to photo-ops they should sell the photo-op tickets with specific times attached to the ticket as to not create huge line ups of people seeking the same photo at the same time. I had my photo-ops planned out prior to going to Calgary and I used their time schedule to make it work and because I got turned away on several lines I had to pass up some of my photo-ops I wanted to get done. I had wanted to get a photo with Adam West and Katee Sackhoff but because my other photo-ops got bumped around I had to drop them which really sucked.

But over all it was a great con. Hopefully next year the organizers will have all the bumps from this year smoothed out for next year. And maybe a few less celebrities is what is needed. I like having a variety of people coming as much as the next guy but this year was just too many big names for such a small venue. That being said I look forward to next years con and I will be saving up to purchase a VIP Pass. The VIP pass allows that ticket holder to get first priority to all photo-ops and autograph lines and other cool perks. Those tickets are over $300 but with all the time saved by having such a ticket makes it all worth while. So I will be saving for a VIP ticket for 2013 for sure.

And with that I say 'Nuff Said'.

Beer Goggles: May 2012

Beer Goggles: May 2012

As part of my 'Random Nerdness' Blog I have included a monthly update I am calling 'Beer Goggles' where I will share a brief outline on what I am drinking, reading, viewing and listening to for the month.

Beer: I am drinking some 'Old Milwaukee'. It's cheap and it's not half bad. I'm also drinking me some Traditional Ale from Calgary's Big Rock Brewing Company. Also on the non-beer side of things I am enjoying Sanpellegrino's 'Blood Orange' sparkling fruit beverage.

Comics & Books: I am almost a year behind in reading 'Hulk' from Marvel Comics. I keep ordering it every month and the pile keeps on getting bigger so this month I intend to get caught up on the adventures of the Red Goliath, also known as Thunderbolt Ross.

I bought the first 2 novels in Peter David's 'The Hidden Earth Chronicles' at the Calgary Expo, from Mr Peter David himself and I even had them autographed. I'm not a big fan of fantasy novels but given that this is written by Peter David it should be an enjoyable read. I'm starting Book 1 in May.

I'm also still reading 'The Great American Cereal Book'. Awesome history about breakfast cereals that Canadian consumers share with our American neighbours.

In March I bought and continue to read the 'Compendium' of the comic book series 'The Walking Dead'. In March I finished the first trade and I was blown away by what I read and saw. I loved it so much I went out and ordered the first Compendium of this comic series, and I will buy the second one when it is released. Robert Kirkman is perhaps one of the greatest comic book writers in history!

Viewing: I'm a little behind in my DC Animation viewing so this month I will be watching for the first time the 'Batman Year One', 'Wonder Woman' and 'Batman/Superman Public Enemies' DVD movies. DC has done an excellent job with their movies that I have already seen so I'm sure to be pleased.

Captains Log: Saturday 4/28/12 Calgary

Hey there friend thanks for checking out the blog. Thanks to social media outlets Facebook and Twitter I was able to document my recent trip to the Calgary Comic And Entertainment Expo 2012. It was quite the quest filled with misadventure, good times and a few bad. Among my many activities that weekend it included the fact I got drunk with 'The Honky Tonk Man', I got to meet Stan Lee and most of the cast of 'Star Trek: The Next Generation', and I had a talk with comic book writing icon Peter David.

The following is a log of each days activities with pictures included, with more blogs and pics later in the week. Enjoy and please leave a comment!

Captains Log: Saturday 4/28/12 Calgary

Seriously how many people can say they partied with The Honky Tonk Man?? I can!!! 12 hours ago I never would have imagined me using those words in a sentence!
Chris Lockhart Calgary Expo: where dreams you never imagined come true...

After a night of having beers with The Honky Tonk Man and only getting 4 hours of sleep I'm ready to tackle another day at the Calgary Comic Expo. Gonna get my pic with Stan Lee and Patrick Stewart (Captain Picard)!!
-Chris Lockhart Wish I could have slept longer but when that sun light hits my eyes I'm done. Plus this room is too warm. Plus I'm getting older and I like to complain about stuff.

Nice and sunny in Calgary!

Watching a chick dressed as 'Wonder Woman' sing and 'Super Mario' play guitar on stage at the Corral. They are actually good!

Got my pic with Stan Lee!!!

had to give up on getting a pic with Patrick Stewart today. Waited in line for an hour and a half for nothing! In line for my Fringe pic now
-Chris Lockhart Will try again tomorrow, but I definitely won't be getting as many pics as I wanted because they are poorly organized here!
-Chris Lockhart And now the Fringe line cancelled! Pissed off much!
-Chris Lockhart Back in line for Patrick Stewart...
-Brandy Stecyk-Sarapuk Wtf are they doing there? Why did you have to give it up? I woukd have raised the roof! !!
-Chris Lockhart I felt like it. Very poorly organized photo ops!
-Brandy Stecyk-Sarapuk shit man I should take my photography down there and run the show !! ......
-Chris Lockhart I don't know why they don't have more photographers here in multiple locations. It would be a gold mine!

* Captain Picard said "well done" to me!
-Chris Lockhart Meeting him was AWESOME!
-Chris Lockhart Very nice guy. Was worth all the hassle and 3 hour wait in line!!!

back at the room for a couple hours. Then off to the Star Trek :TNG EXPOsed show!!! Bought a few items, got to meet one of my comic book writer heroes, Peter David. He autographed some Hulk comics and novels for me.

-Will Kuhn Will they let you back in later? We were told once you left you can't get back in
-Will Kuhn We couldnt get in at all
-Chris Lockhart Crazy amount of people. My legs are so sore right now! Had to refund some of my photo ops because there is no way they can organize photo ops. Problem is they over sell and give no thought as to having enough time for everyone. Tomorrow getting my pic with Data (Brent Spiner) and the Fringe stars (John Noble and Jasika Nicole)
-Chris Lockhart I'd assume so. The TNG thing is a separate ticketed event.
-Will Kuhn Oh ok
-Chris Lockhart TNG EXPOsed is through Ticketmaster, not the Calgary Con. So they better let me in or there will be hell to pay! With all the money they make why don't they hire some people to actually run this thing efficiently?
-Will Kuhn I don't know, they must of turned away 3 to 5 thousand people

*No partying with 'Honky Tonk' tonight... I am so tired!!! Waiting in line to get into the TNG EXPOsed show!
-Chris Lockhart I think I should volunteer here next year. You don't do much, you get to have 'authority', you get to meet the stars for free and all the free pizza you want (apparently).
-Chris Lockhart But I am curious what celeb's may be at the lounge tonight...

*Finally at my seat for the show. Johnny Summers and his band is playing 'Sinatra' before the show starts.

wish they would have Brent Spiner come out on stage and sing some tunes.

*MOM; haven't had a chance to get an autograph yet from the 'Weasley Twins'. You wouldn't believe the line up they had!
-Darcy Lockhart Keep trying please

*Jailhouse Rock, swing band style!

*now Queen!! This band rocks!

*now some tall dude has to sit in front of me!! Chris Smash Now!!

*a guy just proposed to his girl and she said yes. While wearing Starfleet uniforms no less!!
Chris Lockhart Amazing stuff happens at the Calgary Con!
-Brianna Lockhart Rydvall Now that is romantic!!! Reminds me of The Terminal!!!!!!
-Brandy Stecyk-Sarapuk Now that is romance of the nerds !!! haha
-Angela Watt Oh man! Love it!!! I'd love to plan a trekkie wedding!! So amazing and takes a lot of guts for public proposal.
-Chris Lockhart I did a public proposal when I proposed.
-Angela Watt Very nicely done then, sir. I tip my hat to you
-Chris Lockhart Not that I'm bragging. But be sure to check out the story in a future installment of my Random Nerdness Blog... Shameless self promotion...
-Angela Watt Do it up! Maybe you could also place it on or do a summation with a link on my event planning blog. Also shameless self promotion. LOL
-Chris Lockhart Very nice! Lol

*now the show starts!!
-Chris Lockhart Garret Wang from Star Trek: Voyager is on stage.
-Chris Lockhart ‎8pm and still no Next Gen crew on stage!!! And now they call a 30 minute intermission. WTF????????? I'm running out of nice things to say about this place!!! Chris Smash now!
-Chris Lockhart Don't get me wrong I do enjoy my time in Calgary but this show needs better organization. There's no need to be pissing people off the way they are.
-Chris Lockhart Gotta pee but it's a 2 hour line up to the urinal...volunteers are turning people away fron the bathroom (lol). May have to man up and pee into my water bottle.
-Chris Lockhart People are getting pushy. May have to hand out some donkey punches...
-Chris Lockhart Seriously a douche with a braided goatee asked me to move to the side... If only I had some scissors to cut that abortion off his chin...
-Chris Lockhart I need a beer. But that won't help with the peeing situation...
-Chris Lockhart Hour and a half into the show and still no TNG cast... Maybe their transporter is broke? Where's Chief O'Brien? And where's Waldo?
-Chris Lockhart Now the shows starting?
-Chris Lockhart Teddy, Cynthia and Ajay from 'Innerspace' are on stage. They will be moderating the show!!

-Chris Lockhart Now the TNG cast is being brought out!
-Chris Lockhart Awesome!

-Chris Lockhart Dr Crusher is talking about Data's on button. She turned him on! Lol
-Lori Flood u are too funny
-Chris Lockhart Wil Wheaton just said something very touching. Very nice guy!

-Chris Lockhart Q just showed up!!! Holy shit!

-Chris Lockhart Wil Wheaton just asked Patrick Stewart about being on X-Men!
-Chris Lockhart Was a great show. Couldn't get any good pics due to poor lighting and a cheap camera. But still great. Hope they air it somewhere or available on iTunes. Couldn't get a cab so I added a half hour walking time. Tomorrow I plan to get my pic with Brent Spiner and Denise Crosby's autograph. Then I'll have met every TNG cast member!

* Watching 'Global Calgary' and they were showing how people were being turned away from the Calgary Con today. Even people with 3 day passes were not allowed in! Very poor planning...
Chris Lockhart The best is the Organizers are saying they didn't over sell the show. Bullshit!! If it wasn't over sold the fire martial would allow them to let everyone who paid for a ticket to go in. They got greedy, it's that simple. Also that was the problem with the photo-ops too. They got greedy and over sold. It's just a matter of doing the math. Only sell what you can to make it work. I got to meet some cool celebs, get my pic taken, but not entirely sure if I'll be back for next year. Today really opened my eyes to how disorganized they are at the con. I've been told that the Toronto, Vancouver and Seattle Cons are much better organized. I may go there next year instead. We'll see who they bring to Calgary next year...Might make the trek to Vulcan Alberta for 'Spock Days' in june, either this year or next maybe. They get some celebs there too. But Comic Cons are better because people from comics, sci-fi, horror, wrestling and fantasy are included too. Maybe I'm just grumpy cause I'm tired. Well good night my friends and readers. See you in the future! (Tomorrow morning)...On CTV Calgary they reported Con Organizers are considering giving thise who couldn't get in with refunds...well duh!! You sold a service you didn't provide you give people their money back!!
-Brianna Lockhart Rydvall I'd be asking for a refund!!!!
-Angela Watt Wow. Just. Wow.
-Will Kuhn I heard they were doing that this afternoon
