Michael B Jordan as ‘Superman’?

So I saw an article on Facebook that Warner Brothers/DC are thinking of casting actor Michael B Jordan as their new ‘Superman’. I don’t know why they want to part ways with Henry Cavill, his portrayal of Supes was great. The reasons for Superman’s recent flops don’t lie with Cavill but rather the material he was forced to work with. DC comics did do a Barrack Obama inspired Superman on another Earth so maybe he’ll be playing that version...

But some fans argue that this a lame stunt. I agree but problem is established character names sells tickets. And even stunt casting creates buzz which translates to more butts in seats which means more $$$. Sometimes big business steps on what we fans want.

Honestly the more I think of it ‘Superman’ is one of the few characters I don’t mind being changed, in terms of race. In 1938 had Jerry Seigel and Joe Shuster tried to sell him as a black character he never would have been published. It’s just the way things were back then. So if they want to change it up I’m ok with it. But I do understand why people would want it to stay the same as well.

I think DC is looking at all the accolades that ‘Black Panther’ has received and they are wondering how to compete with Marvel. So they think to cast a part of Black Panthers success (Michael B Jordon) as their new ‘Superman’... (sadly in a lot of ways DC is a step behind their rivals...)

Man of Steel Movie Review (Spoiler Free...until the end)

For the most part this will be a spoiler free review, with a few specific spoilers at the end of the post, but you will be warned. For the bulk of the post however I will be talking about stuff seen in the movie trailers and previews leading up to the film. So there will be some characters and plot points referenced, so if you have been holding out completely on finding out anything about the film there may be some spoilers for you. But I will not get into plot point specifics, and will generalize as much as I can. So here we go:

I really liked this movie. I would go so far as to say it is my favorite Superman film ever made. Henry Cavill was excellent as Kal-El/Superman. Russell Crowe was phenomenal as Jor-El/Superman's 'real' Dad. Kevin Costner was superb as 'Pa' Kent. Amy Adams made an excellent Lois Lane, red hair and all. And finally Michael Shannon made for an excellent General Zod. All in all the casting was amazing.

This is an origin story and they did a great job telling us where Superman came from. Problem is the writers and Zach Snyder should have kept this a origin story, instead of turning the last half of the movie into a knock down super battle. Not that theres anything wrong with a cool super hero battle movie, but it was just too soon.

Lets back up a bit. From what I remember the first 2 Christopher Reeve 'Superman' films were actually written as one movie. First half was to introduce Superman, Krypton, Zod, Lex Luthor and the second half was to be the big battle for Earth. But for budget and timing reasons they split the story into two films which worked. But for this film the filmmakers put both elements together (minus Lex Luthor) and as a result we have a film that was great to start, then turned good (and cluttered) for the second half.

Again it seemed like the filmmakers were trying to put too much into this first film. No doubt under pressure to perform in a big way to ensure a sequel and perhaps a lead up to a JLA film. It again was still a good film and a feast for the eyes, but at times it was almost too much to follow and felt too heavy.

All in all I loved this film. It could have been better, but overall it was a satisfying return of Superman to the big screen, with a sequel from what I understand has already been green lit.

**** 4 stars out of 5 is the rating I give 'Man of Steel'. Go see this film. Seeing it on the big screen was definitely awesome!

SPOILER ZONE: NOW I WILL BE GETTING INTO SOME SPECIFICS ABOUT THE FILM ITSELF.

I did have a few nitpicks I wanted to get off my chest:

- Too much story for an origin film: Again this film should have focused on the rise of Clark Kent and his eventual role as 'Superman' and defender of the Earth. But no sooner does he get the suit and he's fighting off a Zod invasion. Again Zod should have been saved for the sequel and only seen in the flashbacks on Krypton. Lex Luthor should have been the big bad for an origin story.

- Smallville and Metropolis sure do take a beating in these films. Superman's battle with Zod saw skyscrapers taken down to the ground...what about the people in the buildings??? I know there was supposed to have been an evacuation but still there had to be someone left in them or near them that would have been killed. Yet Kal-El & Zod battle and buildings are crushed all over the place and your telling me there are no casualties?  In the comics Superman would have went out of his way to ensure the safety of innocents. He would have led Zod away from civilians, not engaged him in battle. True this is a rookie Superman, but you think at the end of the film the death toll would be front page news and people despite being saved by Supes would be questioning how he went about saving them with little regard to human life. At least that is how I felt watching this battle of titans.

- I liked how Lois used her investigative instincts to actually find Superman and his alter ego Clark Kent. It never made sense to me that Lois would never figure out they are the same person, with her being this world famous investigative journalist and all. So I was happy they threw that out the window. However at the end of the film 'Clark Kent' decides to work at the Dailey Planet. Why? If you really were Superman and you wanted to help people why would you not make being Superman your fulltime job? When not battling villains he could use his powers to bring food to the hungry, stop people with nuclear weapons, put out forest fires, etc. Why waste time pretending to be a regular person at a regular job? It's an outdated notion that I was hoping the filmmakers were getting away from.

Well that's all I got folks. It is a good film and worth watching for sure. I will be watching 'Pacific Rim' & ' The Wolverine' later this summer, so expect reviews on them. Till next time, see you in the future!

I would like to nominate Michael Kopsa (Captain Windmark from 'Fringe') for the role of 'Lex Luthor'!

This week’s assignment from the League Of Extraordinary Bloggers: “Spacemen:

For this weeks league assignment I am going to give 5 reasons why my favourite character that works in space is awesome, and he has been featured in TV, Film, comic books, novels, etc. And that spaceman: Captain James Tiberius Kirk!! And after discussing Captain Kirk I will make 5 honourable mentions for cool 'spacemen'.

Captain James Tiberius Kirk (At A Glance):

1: Captain of the best ship in Starfleet: The USS Enterprise is legendary and really there is no other ship that compares (looking at you Voyager!). In the original series he was at least 33 years old when he got command, maybe even younger. In the JJ Abrams rebooted timeline he was even younger. And why not, he truly is a born leader and a natural when commanding a ship. And he commands the greatest ship of them all!!

2: Ladies man: He has a way with the ladies, whether they be human or alien. He even got Joan Collins in her prime!! What teenage boy (or adult man) did not want to be Captain Kirk with his track record with the ladies. Who hasn't had a fantasy about an Orion slave girl? Kirk has lived such fantasy!

3: Rule do not apply: The Kobayashi Maru scenario is said to be the no win scenario, but Kirk won it in both timelines! How? Because he changed the rules! Some would call him a cheat, a rule breaker, etc. I call him freakin awesome!!

It's not a weapon Kirk! Back in your pants!
4: Not just an awesome traveler in space but time as well: He has saved history and Earth several times by using time travel. He's help save the world from the Nazi's, saved the whales, argued with 80's punkers, and even traveled to the future in his final appearance sacrificed himself and saved a planet of people he never met. Truly a great time traveling hero.

5: Kicks some serious ass: This dude can fight. He fought the Gorn on Cestus 3, fought a genetically engineered Khan and won! This guy does not always want to fight but will and kick ass when he does.

5 Honorable Spacemen Mentions:

1: Han Solo: Coolest character from the Star Wars franchise! And he got Princess Leia! (I'll bet he gets her to wear the gold bikini in bed....whoohoo!)

2: He-Man: Coolest cartoon character ever! He qualifies as a spaceman because he does have some cool futuristic vehicles and uses portals to travel to different planets. When I say He-Man I am referring to the original MOTU series and 2002 series. Not the He-Man from the lame He-Man New Adventures series.

3: Captain Jean Luc Picard: Also an awesome Captain of the Federation starship Enterprise.

4: Superman: He is a hero that can go into space and battle in space. Plus he's from the planet Krypton.

5: Starbuck: Whether it be the Dirk Benedict character from the 70's Battlestar Galactica or the super sexy Katee Sackhoff character from the 2000's BSG reboot, Starbuck is a character that every guy wants to hang out with. Guys want to be Dirk Benedict, and guys want to be with Katee Sackhoff. Excellent kick ass character.

Marvel VS DC: Tournament of Death!!

I originally wrote this on my Facebook 'Random Nerdness' blog a few years back. Thought I would reproduce it here. Enjoy:

Random Nerdness #8: Marvel VS. DC... Who Wins??
by C.Lockhart

February 14th, 2010

Happy Valentines Day To You All!!!

I worked hard on this one. It required a lot of my nerd knowledge and brain power. Here it is, my masterpiece of total comic book nerdness:

*** Marvel Comics Versus DC Comics: Who would win?? ***

In 1996 they did a comic special called 'Marvel VS DC' in which the creative talent of those comic companies created matches between their characters like 'Hulk VS Superman', 'Spider-man VS Super-boy', 'Captain America VS Batman' and so on. Then they had the fans vote on the matches to determine who should win and they went with that. I hated that. They should have had characters drawn from random and have them battle and the winner determined through logic and skill, not fan votes. So with my vast nerd knowledge of Marvel and DC comics I selected 15 characters from each company and randomly drew characters from each company and had them face off against each other. I picked the winner by using logic and reasoning: What powers do each hero or villain have and what weaknesses do each have, and that is how I was able to determine the winner from the random matches.

I am a nerd who is playing the role of God in this scenario. This is my idea for another Marvel VS DC comic, if this fictional tournament that occurred in my brain were published as a comic book special it would go like this: One DC character and one Marvel character were picked at random, I literally picked names out of a hat. The first match takes place in an old Roman Arena. The Winner will fight against another random challenger from the other comic company at that characters home base (New york City, Metropolis, etc). 29 matches in total. The characters include both heroes and villains from each company. I will explain my reasons for choosing the winners.
