Did you have the power? Remembering The Power Tour from 1987

Did you have the power? Remembering The Power Tour from 1987

News reached us in the rural community of Fort Assiniboine that He-Man and She-Ra were coming to Edmonton’s Northlands Coliseum. It must have been advertised on tv and in the newspapers; irregardless I knew we had to be there. I begged and pleaded with my Mom and with the help of Grandma and Grandpa LaBerge we had enough money for myself, my sister and our cousin Lenny to attend.

I was only 7 at the time so my memory is a little muddy but what I remember is this:

  • back then a trip to the big city of Edmonton was a big trip. Growing up in the country and going to school in a village with a population under 200 people, to see skyscrapers and four lanes of traffic is an eye opening experience.
  • I remember my Mom and Dad driving myself, my sister and cousin Lenny to the event.
  • I remember Northlands Coliseum being this huge magical building. This was the home of the Edmonton Oilers on TV! This was like (for 7 year old Chris) seeing the Eiffel Tower.
  • I remember my cousin Lenny and I each getting white plastic ‘He-Man like’ swords which glowed green in the dark. Which we held high and proudly in He-Mans honour when called upon.
  • I remember She-Ra being absolutely beautiful
  • I remember being excited seeing all the familiar characters from my beloved ‘Masters of the Universe’.
  • I remember after the show going through a McDonalds drive thru. McDonalds was a major treat for any kid from the country. Anyway I remember this one because my Mom ordered a ‘Filet O’ Fish’ for me. I HATE ‘Filet O’ Fish’ then and for the rest of my life.
  • A few weeks after the show my plastic He-Man sword broke, ironically while role playing as He-Man.

Anyway I want to thank my Mom, Dad and Grandma & Grandpa LaBerge for making it possible to see He-Man.
