Parliament Decorum

Parliament Decorum

Have you ever watched our MP’s debate in Parliament? They literally make statements and ask pointed questions to their political rivals. Some of the questions are legit and Canadians want to know the answer…but they seemingly don’t have to answer anything they don’t want to, simply deflect with a statement and/or a question of their own. Meanwhile all the background MP’s yell, chant, or simply continue talking while the MP who has the floor is speaking. These adults act like children. These elected officials that are paid to represent YOU and ME need to do better regardless of what party they represent.

A few simple rules should be followed to make Government more productive:

  • MP’s that are recognized by the House Speaker to speak are the only voice that should be heard. Anyone else caught trying to interrupt would be escorted out of the session and fined.
  • MP’s would be required to answer any question put to them truthfully to the best of their knowledge. Swear upon a Bible like a witness in a Court. If a MP is caught lying they would be fined and their constituents would be informed what their MP did.
  • MP’s are required to attend ALL sessions of Parliament. Only a doctor verified illness or death in the family can excuse them from attending Parliament. Any trips, fund raising or any event that would require them to miss Parliament would need to be rescheduled. Professional athletes manage their time in order to make their team obligations, MP’s can do that too.

Just a few thoughts I had when trying to watch our MP’s debate yesterday and our lovely PM was not in attendance.
